[It's some time after the investigation that Percy finds himself making rounds and checking on those he hasn't yet. He knows Yuna's in good hands, as is Xion, and that takes some weight off of him. He finds that he's restless though, frustrated that somehow something like this happened again under their noses.

It's why he finds Barnham in the hall holding a towel, and he tilts his head carefully. There's a box in his arms and Mrs. O'Leary's at his feet, barking cheerfully at the man who helped save her.

Percy, on the other hand, seems a little bummed to see Barnham's demeanor.]

Mr. Barnham? [Just a tentative address, just to see how Barnham's really holding up.]

[He hates having to depend on luck, and yet he knows...]

I suppose...that is the best we can hope for indeed.

[It's unfortunate he's a protag and luck is how he rolls.]

It will get better. Especially if we start watching people more closely. [He looks at the ceiling.] ...what else can I do? [The "for you" goes unsaid.]

[He seems amused, at least, by the offer.]

[He actually looks embarrassed about being called on it, blinking in surprise and trying a few sentences and failing.]

I don't have a bleeding heart. [And his favorite color isn't blue, clearly.] I just...you know. [He had concerns.] But I get it. I'll do what I can.

[He just...has a bleeding heart?? Uh huh, okay, Percy.]

... Though I shall thank you for your assistance even so. And... for the drink, as well.

Anytime. There's more stuff where that came from. [Another shake of the box.]

...should I leave you alone for now then? [Since Barnham seems to be Okay.]

There's other stuff in the box besides Gatorade, Mr. Barnham. [But he's amused nevertheless. He nods though...and settles back in the couch.]

Good to know. Maybe I'll just...hang out here for a while then. If that's okay. [They can brood in silence if Barnham wants, Percy's good at brooding sometimes.]

[It's fine, Percy, you're fine!!

[Brooding and staring into space seems good, but he turns his head when Barnham speaks again.]

What is it you are fighting for, Young Percy?

[...why you gotta do this, Barnham.]

Do you mean here? Or back home? [In his mind they tie into each other, but he doesn't want to reveal what's unnecessary.]

Not exactly, but one is a possibility and one is "I have to do this myself or the world's in huge trouble." [Prophecies, man.]

…I'm fighting to save the world, Mr. Barnham. Me and Annabeth both, along with five of our friends. We're the only ones who can fulfill the Prophecy of Seven to defeat Gaea and protect civilization from being totally destroyed. So. Kind of the same thing as here, but on a bigger scale. Defeat the giants, get to Gaea, stop Gaea, save mankind. After the second Titan War last summer this came up. Maybe after this, we'll finally get some down time. [The way he says it suggests that it's not likely, but oh well. He's used to it.]

[moraled]

[That sure is a lot to process. He's quiet for a moment, contemplative, before he nods.]

And thus, your desperation to leave this place. To save your own world, and those within it.

And thus your designation as "hero".

Yes. [More or less.] They call us the heroes of Olympus. The Camp Annabeth and I met at trains heroes for quests and prophecies like this. We saved the world last summer. Now we have to do it again because we didn't know Gaea was already working while we were fighting the Titans.

[A pause.] I have to get home. I have to get home to finish what I started, but I can't leave without Annabeth. So I continue helping in trials and investigations and keeping people safe here until we find another way to stop the game from wiping us all out. My home is important, but so are the people in this place. So...I have to keep fighting to help save them, too.

[Which is why each losing trial is actually pretty hard, but he won't say so.]

[... hm.]

That is a weighty burden to bear for someone so young.

["Hero". That's quite the title. He's quiet for a moment longer...and then he sighs.]

I understand. You consider it your duty as well to protect those who require protection. It is... only to be expected. However... you must remember your true loyalties.

[To his home, over everything.]

You must survive.

I think I got used to it. I've been doing this for a few years now. [A lopsided smile, though there's no amusement to it.] But yes, I do. I'm not going to stand by and let people get hurt if there's something I can do about it. If I can fight to protect, then I will. [Those words are important though, and there's a deep inhale.]

I'll be okay. People have wanted me dead since I was twelve. And…I have to survive not just for the world, but for her. [Annabeth, somehow, is on a whole other level than the rest of the world.] I kind of refuse to lay down and die.

[moraled]

[... Well. Honestly?]

Your determination cannot be faulted in any way, nor can your goals.

[Barnham shifts to rest a hand on Percy's shoulder, meeting his eyes seriously.]

If there is aught I can do for you at any point, please inform me. I, too, would see your goals accomplished.

[hydrokinetics]

[It's here he meets Barnham's eyes for a time before he bows his head, both quietly honored and humbled by that.]

...thank you, sir. [It's more than he could ask in this place when everyone wants to try to get home.] The most you could do for me now is stay safe and keep helping in trials. I think together we'll get better at these things and make it work. But above everything else, stay safe.

[moraled]

... I shall do my best.

[Isn't that all he can promise--to both of those requests?]
